The line began to move, and Brooke took Lucas’ hand. She simply followed the others, unsure of where they were going. She guessed they’d be going to the place where they would eat and sleep, but considering how the day had gone, she hesitated to make any assumptions. For all she knew, they could be taking the women to another job requiring less light, meaning that they could do it at night. She thought to ask the woman in front of her where they were going, but especially with all the people around, she decided it wasn’t worth it. Brooke would find out soon enough.

As they walked down the street, she noticed there were fewer people out than there’d been during the day. They’d likely gone to their homes, probably to stay away from zombies and other terrors of the night. Besides zombies, Brooke had heard stories of other things making their way into the major cities since the world had ended, including bobcats and even bears.

Staying in a single-file line, the women walked toward the front door of a hotel. Brooke studied the place from the bottom to its roughly fifteenth floor at the top. Some graffiti covered the walls around the door with words that Brooke couldn’t make out. Many of the windows were shattered, on up to the top floor. It didn’t appear to be the nicest place, but it was a hotel. Brooke assumed that, at a minimum, she and Lucas would at least have a carpeted floor to sleep on. Maybe even a bed, though she refused to get her hopes up for that.

They entered through the broken glass doors and stepped into the lobby. All of the furniture was gone from the large space. What was left included only the front desk and debris scattered over the floor. Like outside, graffiti covered much of the walls. And the smell… Brooke had gotten used to the foul odors of this world, but the stench permeating the air in this enclosed space made her gag. It smelled like a mix of dead bodies and garbage that had been left in the sun for months.

Brooke heard a squeaking noise and looked to her right to see two enormous rats scurrying across the floor, ducking into the walls to hide from the line of women. Even before the virus had come, this place would’ve been a two-star hotel at best. But now, having been forgotten by the old world and apparently left behind for only the prisoners of this camp, the place was a total dump.

Three guards stood in the lobby as the line of women moved through it, each guard holding a gun. Brooke felt as if they were staring right at her, but she focused on getting a feel for the area and also looking around for Jon. If she was being brought to this hotel, then surely he would be, as well. That was, assuming he was alive.

They went past the elevator, the doors open and the mirror inside broken.
